In a recent conversation, Shahana, who plays a police officer in the film, expressed feelings of happiness, pride and encouragement after the film was nominated for a prestigious award. She also emphasized that this moment is a cause for celebration not only for herself but also for director Sandhya Suri and all the staff involved.
The film is an international co-production involving the UK, India, Germany and France. But it was Britain’s official submission for the Oscars and Shahana strongly believes that India too has good reason to be proud of the film. “I don’t believe in the separation of ‘this is mine and that is yours,’” the actress told Hindustan Times. A huge Indian team is involved. India too has good reason to be proud of this. I don’t think it’s limited to the state.”
She believes the film is more thematic and about storytelling and diversity. As long as the story has Indian roots, it has no bearing on who submitted the film.
‘Santosh’ will compete with 14 other films for the coveted Oscar nomination. She expresses a hopeful yet calm outlook on the film’s potential success. The actress said she would be happy if the film was nominated, but was accepting any outcome, trusting her intuition that the film had a good chance of being nominated.
Meanwhile, India’s official stance on the Oscars, Kiran Rao‘Laapataa Ladies’ did not make it to the rankings.
